Station and river observations

METAR/SPECI uses the existing AviationWeather.gov bulk cache over the lower 48 and its margin. NWPS retains only gauges in the existing action-stage-or-above observed list; forecast-only gauges can have no observation. Absence never establishes zero wind, low water, or safe conditions.

NWS gauge impact statements
  • 12 ft: Maximum Operational Limit of the Gage
  • 10 ft: Water level reaches top of the bridge deck on North Main St. Bridge that crosses the Nansemond River.
  • 8.5 ft: Water enters lower end of Super 8 Hotel parking lot
  • 7.5 ft: Water enters buildings along North Main St north of the gage.
  • 7 ft: Water level exceeds height of bulk head at marina at Constants Wharf
  • 6.5 ft: Water enters North Main St, on the north side of the river, 200 ft north of the tidal gage.
  • 5.5 ft: Shallow flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline resulting in a low threat of property damage. Expect up to one foot of water above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Water begins to flood N Main St near the gage due to water backing up through drains.

Capture times, quality and provenance

Each report keeps its observation time, first capture of this version, and the SHA-256 of the source bulk body. Corrections at the same observation time replace that point and are marked; unrelated bulk-file changes do not freshen a report.

Only observed gauge records enter this history. Forecast maxima and forecast hydrograph points never become observations. A missing datum or unsupported flow value remains unknown.
