Station and river observations

METAR/SPECI uses the existing AviationWeather.gov bulk cache over the lower 48 and its margin. NWPS retains only gauges in the existing action-stage-or-above observed list; forecast-only gauges can have no observation. Absence never establishes zero wind, low water, or safe conditions.

NWS gauge impact statements
  • 13.4 ft: Water reaches the school. The school is the building with the highest first-floor height.
  • 10.1 ft: Water reaches the washeteria.
  • 9 ft: Water reaches the first two tanks that are adjacent to the washeteria.
  • 8.8 ft: Water reaches the fuel tank containment wall that protects a portion of the fuel tank farm.
  • 8.7 ft: Water reaches the school water tank.
  • 7.2 ft: Water reaches the generator facility that provides power to Kipnuk.
  • 6.4 ft: Water reaches a portion of the fuel tank farm that is unprotected by a containment wall.
  • 5.7 ft: Water reaches the wastewater lagooon. Additionally, several buildings begin to receive water of less than 1 foot.
  • 4.8 ft: Water reaches the freshwater lagoon located west of the south end of the airstrip. This lagoon is Kipnuk's primary freshwater source.
  • 4.6 ft: The two lowest residential buildings experience major flooding.
  • 4.2 ft: Water reaches the washeteria fuel tank.
  • 3.6 ft: Approximately 1 ft of water covers the lowest section of the airstrip access road.
  • 2.8 ft: A portion of Kipnuk north of the bridge crossing near the council building would be cut off from the remainder of the village by approximately 1.0 ft in depth. A portion of Kipnuk south of the school may be cut off from the remainder of the village by water 1.0 ft in depth. This water level is similar to Merbok in September 2022 when water peaked at approximately 3.0 ft.
  • 1.5 ft: Water may reach but not overtop the lowest portions of boardwalks and roads at this height. The integrity of roads and boardwalks may be impacted by erosion and water damage, even if flood waters do not overtop these surfaces. Additionally, water on roads and boardwalks may make these surfaces difficult to traverse safely.
  • 1.3 ft: Water reaches the lowest private property at this height. Private property may include storage sheds, boats, fishing equipment, vehicles, and other property at ground level outside of occupied structures.
  • 0.6 ft: The upper edge of the riverbank, including the banks of tributaries within the boundary of Kipnuk, are overtopped by flood waters at this height.

Capture times, quality and provenance

Each report keeps its observation time, first capture of this version, and the SHA-256 of the source bulk body. Corrections at the same observation time replace that point and are marked; unrelated bulk-file changes do not freshen a report.

Only observed gauge records enter this history. Forecast maxima and forecast hydrograph points never become observations. A missing datum or unsupported flow value remains unknown.
